Modernising a mission-critical platform with AI assisted development

Inside a United Nations team, we rebuilt a core module of a mission-critical planning platform as a modern Power Apps Code App, shipped a redesign that had waited years on paper and trained the team to sustain it. The whole engagement, from first call to a working and tested solution, ran in less than a couple of weeks.

Impact

A core module rebuilt as a modern Power Apps Code App in less than a couple of weeks, with the team trained to carry it on

A United Nations team responsible for a planning and performance platform used across its peace operations.

The team runs a planning and performance platform used across United Nations peace operations. It worked, but it had barely changed in years. The module we focused on lived inside a dated canvas app and was slow because it loaded far more data than it needed, a full redesign existed on paper and had never shipped, and there was no internal full-stack capability to take any of it on.

What we did

Build the system, skill the team

We set out the engagement step by step.

01

Mapped the legacy system

We unpacked the application source, restored a copy of the platform's database into a safe local environment and mapped how the whole system actually worked, so every change that followed could be tested against real structures without ever touching live data.

02

Rebuilt the module as a Power Apps Code App

We rebuilt the recommendations module from scratch as a Power Apps Code App: a modern React and TypeScript application that runs hosted inside the organisation's own Power Platform estate, signs users in with their Microsoft Entra ID and reads the live data directly. It gave the team a fast, modern web app without leaving the governed Microsoft environment their security posture depends on, which external hosting would have required.

03

Rebuilt the data layer and shipped the redesign

The app reads and writes the same Azure SQL database through a clean stored-procedure layer, a deliberate choice that solved a connector limitation on the legacy data and gave full create, modify, soft-delete and restore across 1,478 live recommendations, with mission and status filtering, keyword search, sortable columns, pagination and CSV export. The Figma redesign that had sat unimplemented for years finally shipped, matched exactly. The build was published and verified with 16 of 16 automated end-to-end checks, and a rebuilt version of the original app was kept as a guaranteed fallback.

04

Trained the team to sustain it

We designed and delivered live training on AI assisted development, built around the exact workflow used on the rebuild. A full slide deck, an instructor guide, a hands-on practice repository and working guardrails: plan before you build, keep secrets and real data out, verify before you ship. The aim was for the team to be able to extend the app themselves once the engagement ended.

05

Handed everything over

The engagement closed with a complete enablement pack: technical documentation for the new module, a step-by-step deployment runbook, the stored procedures and configuration, a reusable project-memory template and recommendations for governance and safe AI use in development, giving the team what it needs to keep building and deploying independently.
